Original starter set character designs imagined for the Pokemon universe.
All Starter Pokemon follow a pattern: the grass-type are based off pre-historic animals, the fire-type are based upon the Chinese zodiac, and the water-type starters are based off weapons and artillery. Every set of starters follows a single theme. The theme I chose was greek mythology.
The grass starter is based upon the saber-toothed tiger and the chimera. The fire starter is based upon the goat and the satyr. The water starter is based upon the Pegasus and the sport of jousting.
The grass starter.
I incorporated its chimeric traits in a more organized way - its horns and the leaves on its back are remnants of the goat head and wings on the original chimera. Its Venus flytrap tail is a remnant of the snake tail on the chimera.
The fire starter.
I gave this starter a longer tail because the shorter tails didn't seem to fit with the design. To make it more satyr-like, I gave the character a pan flute to hold.
The water starter.
Originally I wanted bubbles in the mane and tail to signify the water, but I found it difficult to incorporate bubbles with this style. The markings on its face and back are reminiscent of the caparison put on horses during jousting. The pattern on its horn represents the lance used in the sport.
